The Arab League recently endorsed the establishment of the Arab Council of Fisheries Wealth, to be headquartered in Sana’a. The new fisheries council was created as a result of a suggestion by the Republic of Yemen. The new council will be responsible for improving the way fisheries are run in Yemen and throughout the Arab world.
“Yemen had presented a proposal to the Arab League in November 2006 for the establishment of an Arab Council of Fisheries,” said Minister of Fisheries Mahmoud al-Saghiri. “I had a discussion in Cairo with Amr Moussa, the Arab League general secretary, on the functions of the Arab Council of Fisheries. We signed an agreement during my visit to Egypt about a scientific and technical cooperation between the Ministry of Fisheries in Yemen and the Academy of Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport Committee of the Arab League.”
The minister also mentioned that he discussed with the Egyptian Minister of Agriculture and Land, possible cooperation in regards to fishery, as well as planning, scientific research, and training. Also, there was interest shown in holding a workshop for investments in fisheries amongst other investors in the two countries.
