The rate of child labor in Yemen increased to 700,000 children in 2007, compared 400,000 children in 2000 who were working unsuitable jobs for their age.
An official study has showed that about 700,000 Yemeni children, ages 6 to 14, are working in the streets of main cities because of poverty.
Yemen’s Central Statistical Organization (CSO), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Social Fund for Development and The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are currently preparing for the launch of a field survey of the employment of children in Yemen.
The study pointed to the significant growth of the phenomenon due to deteriorating economic conditions of the population and widening of the circle of poverty.
The study attributed the reasons of this phenomenon to economic factors, including the spread of poverty and unemployment which leads to the involvement of children in the labor market to earn money and increase family income.
