Yemen's SFD continues to combat poverty and support education

The total number of development projects implemented by the SFD until the end of 2008 was 8,227, costing a total of $787 million. The number of beneficiaries of these projects exceeded 14 million people in various governorates.These projects have generated some 31 million days of employment.

 

Abdulkarim Ismail al-Arhabi, SFD Managing Director said that the SFD exerted serious efforts to provide as many basic services as possible for Yemenis, especially in the poorest rural areas, forms one of the SFD's most important goals. In addition, the SFD pays attention to continuously improving the quality of its interventions and developing advanced work mechanisms, al-Arhabi.

 

The SFD carried out 1,360 projects last year in various sectors, at an estimated cost of $196 million. 

The education and water sectors occupied the top priority of SFD in terms of spending. The SFD allocated 43 percent of the total cost to implement 466 projects in education, and another 160 projects in water related sectors.

The medium-term vision of the SFD from 2006-2010, which is compatible with the third five-year plan for economic and social development,  aims to spend around  $900 million to achieve its objectives. Those objectives include reducing poverty and providing development services to communities and deprived groups with the lowest possible operating cost, ideally not exceeding 5 percent of the project’s value.

The SFD approved the annual plan for the 2009 fiscal year, which will cost a total of $188 million. This money will be used implement 1,396 projects in the various governorates.

The projects will be distributed across various sectors; approximately 900 projects will focus on social protection with an estimated value of $130 million. Economic development will see 235 projects costing $46,262 million, and there will be a further 262 projects costing $46 million.
