Despite predictions to the contrary, Yemeni tourism in 2009 was exceptionally strong. Financial revenues stemming from tourism grew to $899 million in the year, compared to $886 million in 2008, an increase of $13 million. A report recently published by the Tourism Ministry showed that 1,024,000 tourists visited Yemen in 2009 from a wide variety of nationalities.
Yemen witnessed a 19% increase in European visitors this past year, with 42,202 tourists flocking to experience the mysteries and beauties of the country.
Unfortunately not all was healthy, according to the report. Specifically, there was a decrease of tourism and travel from the Middle East and the Americas, down by 10% and 1% respectively.
An official source at the ministry of tourism attributed the European increase to the ministry’s efforts to promote Yemen’s public image abroad. Specific European markets were particularly targeted as areas with strong bilateral relations.
The decrease of American tourists is thought to be a direct manifestation of fear and questions raised in the minds of the American populace as a result of the security situation and the terror attacks of 2009.
