Ahmed Ghaleb, Chairman of Tax Authority, warned the traders who refuse the implementation of sales tax law, saying “ August 21 is the deadline for traders to offer their taxing statements to avoid legal punishment according to tax sales law, pointing that the government is keen to enforce the law.
Ghaleb discussed in a training course, organized by Studies and economic Media Center (SEMC) for economic journalists about the sales tax last Tuesday.
Ghaleb pointed out the importance of the workshop to remove misconceptions promoted by opponents of the sales tax law and to inform the public about the misinformation in order to impede the application of the law. He added that law enforcement is the most important element of structural reform for the state especially in light of the fluctuating oil prices.
He said, "that the application of the law has become an urgent necessity in light of economic conditions experienced by the country and vital to strengthen the national economy as a sustainable resource that must be preserved. "
He reviewed the various stages of the passage of the law, as well as the obstacles that accompany those stages. He mentioned the determination of the State to implement the law and take deterrent penalties against violators of the law.
He attributed opposition to its simplicity and transparency, pointing out that some of the private sector does not want to deal with transparency and refuses taking accounts, regularly records as well as issue bills.
The head of the Mustafa Nasr center said 30 of its economical journalist will participate in the training course which aims to define the Sales Tax creating a clear vision and remove deceptions that resulted from the Tax Authority and representatives from private sectors.
" It’s very important for journalist to know economic issues so as to transmit news in a clear way for people " he affirmed. He pointed out that the Sales tax is a very important issue which has been in the works for over nine years.
The training course included a full explanation of the public sales tax, the measure for implementation and its positive and negative effects will also be reviewed along with experiences of other countries that carried out the general sales tax.
During the session, the participants discussed two working papers. The first one presented the fundamental concepts of the sales tax and applied mechanisms in addition to important goods and services, which will be exempted from sales tax.
The second paper presented the experiences of Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon in the application of the Sales Tax Law.
