IMF, donors to address urgent needs for reducing unemployment in Yemen

The Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Dr. Amat Al-Razak Hommad has met IMF mission Chief to Yemen, Dr. Hassan Al-Atrash.

During the meeting, the IMF mission Chief emphasized that the Fund would seek to address the programs envisaged by the Ministry which aim at poverty alleviation and would support its projects to find solutions to the problem of unemployment, pointing out that he would present the urgent needs of the Ministry during a scheduled meeting with donors next week.

Other social and labor-related problems facing Yemen were also discussed particularly the rising levels of unemployment and prevalence of poverty due to the lay-offs of hundreds of workers in the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the internally aggravated situation pertinent to the political turmoil that hit the country last year.

Minister Hommad pointed to the latest UNICEF report dealing with the situation of children in Yemen who suffer malnutrition as a result of poverty and the widespread phenomenon of street children. She clarified that the ministry adopts a number of programs to address these concerns but which would require support from donors especially the IMF.

Furthermore, the Minister alluded to the efforts exerted by the Ministry to combat unemployment and explore the appropriate mechanism through which Yemeni labor could be absorbed by GCC countries through their respective ministries of labor and social affairs.

In that sense the Minister highlighted the role of the Social Welfare Fund (SWF), in mitigating poverty through the provision of financial support to the needy and vulnerable categories, qualifying and training of labor as well as providing credit to some income generating small enterprises which all aim at fighting unemployment, putting an end to poverty and creating job opportunities to the youth.
