Qatar has announced to fund and manage a huge campaign for the excavation of Yemeni relics. The announcement came after a recent debate held in Doha for twenty archeological experts and the Yemeni minister of culture.
The Qatari deputy museum manager, Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed al-Thani, told the London based Arab newspaper that
“Qatar chose Yemen because it is the Saba civilization cradle, which has found no opportunity to be examined as those of the Iraqi, pharaoh’s and Phoenician civilizations.” He owed this to the hard conditions and complexities accompanying the excavation process in the south, calling for the Yemeni tribes to facilitate the mission of the researchers and scientists pointing out that the Qatari authority managed to, resolve some of the problems in order to provide stability for working environment.
Sheikh Hassan said “there is a lost ring in the history’s chain which will be disclosed by the southern Yemeni civilization. Since our history is linked to the Saba civilization, its disclosure will reveal a lot of what we find in our historical documents.”
In a related issue, the Yemeni Minister of Culture, Mohammed abu Bakr al-Maflahi, said that the project, which will continue to 2o12, is a model for Arab cooperation and will provide political, economic, tourist and job opportunities.
Qatar will fund and administer the excavation and renovation works and finally publish a report over the campaign discoveries. Archeological experts from all over the world will join this campaign which will continue up to 2012 and will be followed by another one lasting until 2017.
