The Syrian cultural week launched in Sana’a on May 11, including many different cultural activities, such as debates, poetry readings, cinema shows, book fairs, plastic arts, photography and other displays of various arts.
Dr. Riyadh Gha’san Agha, the Syrian Minister of Culture commended in his speech the historical Yemeni-Syrian links and their impact on the human civilization, as well as the need for such Arabian links, particularly those between the poets, elites and writers.
In his speech, he also turned the attention to the choice of Damascus as the Arab cultural capital because of the Syrian ancient, modern, and future cultural position.
In his address to the event, Dr. Mohammed abu Bakr al-Maflahi, the Yemeni Minister of Culture, expressed his gratitude for holding this cultural week in Yemen, considering it as an indicator for the Arabic unity. He also spoke about the Arab cultural capital in Damascus and the participation in the Yemeni unity anniversary as gesture for the desire for achieving the Arab unity.
The two ministers opened the exhibition and gave outline of the Syrian traditions, folklore and the cultural progress. Also at the opening ceremony, the Syrian theatrical and dancing band displayed their oriental shows accompanied by western musical instruments.

On his farewell speech, Agha confirmed that besides the plastic arts, artifacts and the photography shows, which reflect the Syrian civilization starting from the pre-historic eras until now, the occasion aims at acquainting the Yemeni, the Syrian people and the future generations with the two countries’ rich cultural heritage.
In a release to the Saba news agency, the Syrian official announced that the Syrian Cultural Center was opened during the cultural events, to further promote cultural links. He added that the events included cultural, artistic shows, plastic arts and lectures that tell about Syria.
Also, the two sides held talks tackling the means of promoting bilateral cultural links.
The Syrian week was attended by several Yemeni ministers, the Syrian Ambassador in Sana’a, accredited diplomats, the cultural, social and intellectual representatives, the Syrian Embassy members and many Yemeni people.
