The Yemen Hotel Union held its third board meeting last week at the Shahran Hotel in the presence of the Minister of Tourism Nabil Hassan al-Fakiah. Union chairman Alwan Saeed al-Shibani, members of the union, and hotel representative from all governorates were also present. The chairman of the union delivered a speech welcoming all attendees, which was held under the slogan of ‘a professional, unified, Yemeni hotel industry.’ He said the unification of Yemen was a crucial step in meeting the ambitions of Yemenis to developing the country economically and socially, and in turn enhancing security and stability. All these have been essential in fostering an atmosphere conducive to growing investment, tourism and, in turn, sources of federal revenues.  In his speech he discussed the achievements of the union in various fields and activities since its inaugural convention. He spoke about the management mission in the development of the hotel business and its involvement in supporting the social sector.

At the meeting, the Tourism Minister announced the inaugural President’s Prize – a US$4m cash prize to be awarded annually to the best tourist hotel in Yemen. The award is designed to encourage innovation, investment and excellence in the Yemeni tourism industry.

The Minister of Tourism Nabil al-Fakiah, wished the members every success in forging closer business ties between the private and public sectors in developing the hotel industry. He said that the ministry has made an important modification by using an electronic registration system for providing and monitoring hotels licenses, which has improved license fee and tax collection. Additionally, the tourism sector is showing that it is closely in touch with the community by signing an agreement between the hotel union and the Yemeni Cancer Center to donate one dollar to the centre for each patient as a part of the national corporation for supporting cancer treatment.
