Dr. Mohammed abu Baker al- Maflahi, Minister of Culture, inaugurated on the first Sunday of the month at ‘Bait al-Thaqafa’ gallery, the intellectual debate organized for two days by al-Thaqafa magazine, which is issued by the Ministry of Culture under the title of
“al-Jawi the cultured, striver and humanitarian”
At the debate which was attended by the president’s cultural advisor, Abdul-Aziz al-Maqaleh, the Minister of Culture described the place which al-Jawi occupied. The Minister said, “al-Jawi was a distinguished cultural, intellectual and endeavoring personality who incorporated at the different stages of his life a model to the perfect intellect within the political life and the general scene. He was sincere to the country and to the people’s cause, and a pioneer in striving for Yemen’s unity at the imamate and the colonialist period.”
The minister added that al-Jawi adopted the idea of unity at an early stage of his life, and insisted on it despite the disbelief of many, who used to believe in the impossibility of such thing for the country; yet he made part of his dream reality, by creating the Yemeni Student League in Egypt in 1965 and 1961, proving that by the establishment of this first unified organization during the period when Yemen had different and separated states, he realized in the Yemeni Writer’s Union what later on will raise the unity banner within the al-Hikma Magazine.
The deputy minister of culture Hisham Ali bin Ali, gave a speech on behalf of the preparatory committee, pointing out to the gesture presented by marking al-Jawi’s tenth anniversary, for which the ministry of culture chose the field of al-Jawi’s national strife, and his action in the fields of information, press and among intellectuals.
He said: “Our marking of the 18th unification anniversary, means celebrating the anniversary of the unity fighter and cultured man, Omar al-Jawi who is present at the unity’s victory over the instigators of war, secession and sedition.”
There was a special focus on reviewing two working papers, the first one was entitled, “The Political Thought in al-Jawi’s Poetry,” by Abdullah Awbal, which reviewed the flagrant political perspective in al-Jawi’s poetry, which characterizes al-Jawi’s distinctive expressions and ambitions over the different political affairs. The paper gave a brief enumeration of al-Jawi’s intellectual stages ever since the beginning of his political progress, which developed with his awareness of the serious impacts of the British colonization in the south. It depicted al-Jawi’s fantastic belief in incorporating the national unity and his ambitions of achieving it as a crucial Yemeni option.
The second paper turned the attention to the most important accomplishments of al-Jawi and his contributions to political journalism through which he managed to established the paper called the “The Unification Institutions at the Division Period,” when founding the Yemeni Writer’s Union, as a first effective unification establishment, with al-Hikma magazine as their mouthpiece. The paper pointed out to the principals which he used to observe, and which al-Jawi used to consider as the core of the unity state, as realized in his clear opinions regarding, “ national unity conservation, “woman and social equality, “religion and the state,” “democracy issues,” and “human rights”
