Photo exhibition of Jean Baptiste Lopez visited by photographer Boushra al-Mutawakeel and painter Salwa al-Eryani.

The Old City of Sana’a played host to a brief photography exhibition on March 19th. Doors to the ‘Visa for Yemen’ exhibition opened for just eight hours, allowing guests to view a selection of 30 photographs displayed in the house of French photographer Jean-Baptiste Lopez. This was the third exhibition held by the photographer since he moved to Yemen a year and a half ago. For this exhibition, Jean-Baptiste Lopez chose pictures that portray his vision of the different regions of Yemen, such as Hadramout, Tihama, and the areas surrounding Sana’a. The photographs were a mixture of both color and black and white, and included some of his latest and more experimental work: light painting in the old city and the hands of artisans that work near his house.
Lopez’s use of changing angles and his experimentation with new possibilities often gave an alternative view to some of Yemen’s well-known sites, and his exploration into drawing and painting with lights, aimed to create images in reference to Arab calligraphy.
There were also a number of pictures showing the working hands of the various craftsmen of the suq al-milh, such as hammering, carving, and metalwork. Although the exhibition is now closed, some of the pictures exhibited can be viewed on the artist’s website,
