For the first time in Yemen, the German-French photographer Alfons Alt held an exhibition with six Yemeni photographers, last Sunday May 24 at the National Museum in Sana'a, where 40 years of Yemeni-Germen relations were celebrated in conjunction with Germen Cultural Week 2009.
The event was held by the French Cultural Center and the Germen House. All six of the Yemeni photographers, Asiah al-Sharabi, Ameen al-Aghbari, Abdul-Rahman Jaber, Bushra al-Mutawkell, Nasser al-Aswadi and Salwa al-Eryani, were there.
In two previous interviews with Alt by the Yemen Observer, he expressed his admiration for Yemen in general and in Yemeni architecture in particular. He confirmed the idea of photography which, as he said, is something that can easily be shared and understood by people that speak different languages. This is why he loves photography.
He also talked about his experience with the six Yemeni photographers saying that, "It is something extraordinary. There are six Yemeni photographers, three are women and three are men…there is parity. In the West we usually critique the East because we say women cannot express themselves and I find that this is a good lesson because I admit that here, there is parity."
The event was attended by a huge number of guests including the wife of the Saudi prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal: princess Amira al-Taweel, and many government officials, diplomats, and businessmen who enjoyed the Art of the exhibition and the music.
At the end of the day, a VIP dinner was served where many guests were heard saying that the exhibition was one of the strongest in Yemeni history, and that the event was highly enjoyable.
