The Al-Afif Cultural Foundation decided to extend the period of submission for researchers applying for the Al-Afif Cultural Foundation awards for the year 2009 until the end of October.

This decision was revealed last Tuesday by Mr. Ahmed al-Sharabi, the Culture Officer at the al-Afif Cultural Foundation, who added that this decision came at the request of many researchers as well as the Foundation’s awareness of the time constraints which had been set at the opening of the award nomination this year.

This year’s award theme is about discrimination against women because Yemeni women have been trapped by incorrect religious interpretation as well as discriminatory laws and legislation that have a devastating impact on their daily lives. The theme of the award is to raise awareness of the issues that affect many women across the country.

According to the award’s outline, discrimination against women is an important subject for study and research by scholars. Researchers should show what Yemeni women face, dismantling the misunderstandings of religious texts and the structure of popular culture which affects laws and legislation.

“Discrimination Against Women: Backgrounds and Connotations” is the title of the research that will be conducted from four different angles: the religious legacy, laws and legislation, public poems, and practice and conduct.

The award for the best work will include a certificate of merit, a sum of money, and gifts from the printing foundation.

The conditions of the contest, in addition to the four aspects described above, include provisions on research which should be documented as follows: “Name of the author - Address - Place of Publication - Publisher - Edition - Date of Publication – Page Number. Research will be judged in a number of categories including the research style, and the judges will take into account the research available on the topic when ranking the pieces.  The research should contain 80 to 100 printed pages including references, sources, and a CD.

Additionally, the researcher should provide five copies of the research, with his/her name submitted on one copy only. The researcher should also attach their curriculum vitae and two personal photos. Copies of previous work should also be submitted with a letter to the president of the foundation explaining the reasons behind his/her desire to obtain the award.

The foundation is not bound to return any work to candidates that win or loose, and it does not accept any previously published research, including previous prize winners, degree Diplomas, M.Sc.’s or Ph.D’s.  The winner’s name will be announced at a special ceremony held by the Foundation on November 2009.

On the other hand the al-Saeed Cultural Foundation award was canceled last week because none of the research submitted to the competition met all of the required conditions, so the Board decided to cancel the award.
