The French Culture Center will celebrate Music Day this year by holding a hip-hop concert at the Yemeni Culture Center on June 21.

The concert will be attended by DJ Malik who will participate in the occasion for the second year in Yemen, the Yemeni artist Abdul-Latif Yacoub, the hip-hop group Gaza Team, and John, who will work with Yemeni break dancers.

Last Tuesday the French Culture Center organized a press conference for those artists who spoke generally about their art and their plans for the Music Day celebration.

The conference started with a word from the Director of the French Culture Center, Mr. Joel Dechezlepretre, who thanked the audience and welcomed John, who was visiting Yemen for the first time, and all other artists who will participate in the occasion.

He thanked Yemeni artist Abdul-Latif Yacoub, who has participated in many of the French Culture Center’s activities, and the break dancers who practice very hard for such events.

The Director of the Yemeni Culture Center Mr. Saeed al-Shadadi said that this cooperation between the two centers comes from their belief that artistic means can achieve what political means cannot.

Abdul-Latif Yacoub said that there aren’t any problems with mixing two different musical styles, even if they are in different languages, because in the world of music, there is no need for translators.

DJ Malik explained to the journalists how he was surprised by the development of Yemeni music and its stunning beauty. He said that he has kept some of the recordings from last year and still listens to them.

He added that hip hop music has become a universal culture, and that it’s not about creating a new style, but it’s about artists finding themselves through music.

From the Gaza Team, Naili Diez said that the aim of this event is to break the barriers between Yemeni and more classical music.

He added that rap music comes either from the neglected or people in need of a way to express themselves and use music as a weapon. Therefore, the content of their songs in general is about the Palestinian issue.

Yemeni rapper Hajjaje, who is currently living in the US, attended the conference and will participate in the concert as well.
