The status of singing and musical instruments from the point of view of Imam al-Shawkaani was discussed at the al-Afif Cultural Foundation last Tuesday, June 16th.

A researcher in Islamic thought, Mujib al-Humaidi presented the lecture. He is known for his controversial thoughts, which reject conservative ideals.

He started his lecture by saying that the art of singing is considered to be the most controversial kind of art because it is related to the Othman era, where it flourished in negative atmospheres.  However, if this never happened, the banned voices would not have existed at all.

Since there is not a clear verse in the Qur’an prohibiting singing, it should be allowed. There is also the logic that everything is halaal as long as the Islamic religion is not affected by it. Al-Humaidi added that the problem in this issue is that with some types of singing, negative atmospheres came with it.

He confirmed that the basic problem with this issue is related to the atmosphere that came with some songs, not the songs themselves. As he said, it has been confirmed that the Prophet Mohammed and some of the companions of the Prophet sometimes attended events with singing.

He said that Imam al-Shawkaani said in his book that although he personally does not like to listen to music, singing, in Islamic Sharia, is allowed.  The evening included a lot of questions and discussion from the audience over such a controversial issue.
