During the symposium Dr. al-Raimi examined topics such as modern economic theories that stress the organic relationship between economic growth and social growth—specifically at the technological level—and the validity of these theories in the success of countries such as South Korea, India and Malaysia, which have had the capacity to raise their level of technology in order to achieve economic growth.
The study which al-Raimi presented also addressed the experience of Jordan's efforts to transition towards a knowledge-based economy and reviewed the problems facing the Yemeni economy today, as well as the opportunities that exist for its advancement. Dr. al-Raimi also discussed the integration of the Yemeni economy with the global knowledge-based economy and offered some suggestions and solutions for orientating it towards human development, as well as the need to make use of the information revolution to solve the problems that the Yemeni economy is currently experiencing.
He spoke about the information technology age that the world now lives in—in which people live on a massive scale at all levels, particularly in the area of information technology.
Today, the Internet is one of the fastest means of communication, as the service covers the entire world. According to recent statistics in a study carried out by the global company Miniwatts Marketing group, the number of Internet users in the world increased from 361 million users in 2000 to 1.5 billion in 2008. The rate of growth in the number of Internet users from 2000 to 2008 was approximately 305.5 percent, making the Internet the fastest-growing means of communication in the history of mankind.
While the radio needed 38 years for 50 million users to receive its programs and television needed 13 years to reach the same number, the Internet reached 361 million users in less than 15 years. One can say that the world has changed dramatically with the advent of the Internet; information technology has invaded all spheres of life and become a tool that can be utilized in almost any sphere. It has imposed itself on all areas of life, such as education, industry, security, culture and health. Essentially, the Internet has become a necessary part of human life.
