The Save the Children Organization, in cooperation with the UNHCR and Civil Affairs authority, organized a public awareness campaign on the importance of birth registration. The campaign promoted taking advantage of Yemen’s free birth certificates. The 2006 ministries’ council law, No. 120, says that birth registration will be given free by the state. The campaign is being held in al-Safiah and al-Khafjih areas in the capital city of Sana’a, from 24th- 27th of January, under the motto, “Free birth certificates are the right for every child.”
The campaign aims at raising public awareness on the importance of registering newborns and it clarifies how it's a right for every child to have and which is for free. It particularly aims at raising the awareness of Yemeni parents, health service providers, neighboring directors, mosques lecturers, educational institutions, and local councils, encouraging the parents to register their newborn children.
The campaign is currently distributing 15,000 posters in targeted areas. Microphones afixed on the top of large trucks broadcast the campaign's messages, rooming the streets of Sana'a, encouraging the public to go to the registry's centers.
"The role that every individual plays in the society in adhering to this campaign is very important. It's crucial of every individual to think of it as one right of the children's rights to have a name and an identity as the Islamic sharia'a always assures and the international convention of children's rights," said Aisha Saeed, the director of the protection program at Save the Children organization.
This campaign is the second in a series of activities, done for the newborns registry project by the Save the Children Organization in Aden. The results of this campaign include an increase in newborns registered; in 2008, the registry number was 2,588, while in 2009 it was 8,000 in Aden.
