Afif leaves a vast void in Yemen’s cultural sphere

Afif was known for his generousity and love of Yemeni culture. Hundreds of Yemenis attended his funeral, mourning the loss of Yemen’s cultural historian.
The death of Mr. Ahmed Jaber Afif places an end to one of Yemen’s most privileged, academic, charismatic and intellectual personas’ activities in shaping Yemen’s culture. His absence has closed a historic and cultural epoch in Yemen and opened emptiness in the cultural and academic spectrum.

Mr. Ahmed Jaber Afif (1928-2010), died at age of 82 at Technology Hospital in Sana’a, last Saturday. He is the founder and chairman of al-Afif cultural foundation, a non-governmental and not-for-profit foundation, encouraging cultural creativity in all forms: art, dance, theater, and photography and one of the most active and most known foundations working in advocating against Qat and its usage.

He was born in 1928 at Biet al-Faqieh in Houdidah governorate. He was one of participants of Yemen’s National Freedom movements during 20th century and continued in developing Yemen’s academically. He was one of who founded Sana’a University by playing a distinguished role in expanding specialized and academic studies. He was posted in several governmental positions. One of the positions was being the minister of Education. In the recent years he was known for his support to the cultural and literal landscape in Yemen through al-Afif Cultural Foundation’s works that was established in early 90s of the past century. He also was very supportive to many national issues. His foundation has been always a great platform in advocated many of the contemporary issues. He personally took care of the foundation’s activities but recently he stopped due to his sickness.

Nationally, he was honored frequently acknowledging his unforgettable stamps in shaping Yemen's cultural stance. Throughout two decades al-Afif cultural foundation has been assistance in encouraging, supporting, replenishing and promoting the past and the current Yemeni cultural scenery and most of its bodies. His life course has not only been nothing than a glorious one but also enormously was a tool in developing the civil society's progress. He dedicated his life for Yemen's welfare and its culture.

Since the day the foundation was founded, it gave a tremendous encouragement to Yemeni artists, painter, poets, novelist, researchers, writer and intellectual of every part of Yemen to present their works through the foundation's lap. It has been a sanctuary to many thriving unknown artists, scholars, and activists trying to let their voices be heard. Establishing forums, symposiums, lectures, exhibitions, and other activities were one of the Foundation's main goals which was to be a vehicle for all the Yemeni intellectuals. The foundation embraced several literal publications and instituted many honoring ceremonies to Yemeni thinkers, scientists, novelists and leading intellectuals in cultural and prominent national work.

Just recently al-Afif cultural foundation celebrated its 21st anniversary. Despite the foundation's great loss, it will always remain active by its dedicated staff members, starting from the Executive Director of the Foundation Mr. Abdel-Bari Taher, and down to all the individual crew members within the distinguished institution. The staff invites all, Yemeni, foreigner, young and old, encouraging educational growth and cultural awareness to always pay a visit to the foundation.
