As the continuous discussion on methods of uprooting terrorism continue, the Yemeni Historical and Future Strategic Studies Center (Manarat) organized a seminar on “Terrorism and extremism...reasons, effects and treatments” last week. The upshot of the seminar was a collective agreement on the fundamental principles for advancing the nation’s fight against terrorism. The fundamental principles are a decent and respectable upbringing for today’s youth and tomorrow’s achievers, patriotic foundations, righteous principles, and moderate religious views along with the virtuous core content of Islam.
The main reason behind conducting the seminar was to encourage joint efforts in fighting terrorism, ripping up extremism and building defenses against endeavors to break the nation’s solidarity and security. This seminar comes as the conclusion of a series of seminars and events organized by the center to address the issue from all angles in order to promote a national vision that will project their ideas to the decision makers.
Participants ranged from academics and researchers to specialists who unanimously agreed on the effective role that education plays, whether at home, in schools or in universities, in reforming any initial causes of religious extremism, or political and social views that can lead to terrorist acts. The seminar pointed out the fact that Islam doesn’t support those kinds of acts, whereas Islam is a religion of peace and love, and terrorism and the use of violence doesn’t have a place in Islam.
The final conclusion of the seminar was that moderation in political and religious visions of the nation’s members is the antidote to all extremist issues. Participants also called for more efforts in partnership between the government and the civil society in establishing more grounded mechanisms to combat extremism. In addition, the seminar called attention to the significant role that media plays and the importance of media in spreading awareness and having constant discussions on the issue.
