The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the General Publishers’ Association, organized a cultural lecture at Culture House entitled “Publishing Issues and the Writer’s Rights.” The lecture was held in celebration of the International Day of the Intellectual Copyright on April 26.
The lecture by the two organizations was opened by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Ahmed salim al-Qadhi, and the General Book Authority Manager, Faris al-Saqaf. Also at the event, a paper titles “The Writers’ Rights in Yemen,” by Hisham Bin Ali, of the Ministry of Culture was reviewed, in addition to a lecture given by Dr. Farris al-Saqaf about the libraries’ role in promoting reading.
Dr. Nabil Abadi, Yemeni Publishers’ Association Manager, lectured about publication issues and the Association’s role in book distribution, as well as a fourth debate about reading and the school library, given by Farida al-Yarimi, head of the Library Sector at the Ministry of Education.
“Books that changed the history” was another talk held by Mohammed al-Musa’bi, General Book Manager at the Ministry of Culture.
Dr. al-Saqaf announced at his lecture that the authority is going to resume the Yemeni civilized role by re-recognition of books by establishing a number of model libraries, like that of al-Baradoni library in Thamar, as well other libraries,being established at Jibla, al-Bidha and Socotra.
He also announced that the Authority is adopting the “the library of libraries scheme,” which is a large national library called “The Yemeni Library.” It will be built in al-Siteen area on 69000 sq. meters, costing YR 40 million. A contract will shortly be signed with China for changing this idea into reality.
Al-Saqaf called for establishing libraries at clubs, schools, camps and hospitals, confirming that they received a lot of demands that are beyond the Authority’s capacity.
