In addition to the new techniques al-Kokabany used in writing these women’s stories, she added to her novel some poems and thoughts by other female Yemeni poets before each story. In those nineteen stories, the readers read not only the nineteen women’s tragedies, but they are also taken through their daughters, sisters and sometimes mothers stories, too.
Through the stories al-Kokabany reveals the darkest secrets of not only Yemeni women, but the whole society as well. She discusses silent
issues in society like family relationships, the education system, corruption of the people in charge, etc.
In the dedication of the novel, al-Kokabany said that this novel is for all the women that are tired of their bitter lives.
For each Yemeni wife sitting silently at her house, for each young girl who is forced to marry, for each sister who had to kill her ambition, and for all Yemeni women; from your sadness, screams, and tears al-Kokabany wrote this novel.
