Agricultural Production Increases to YR 456 in 2006, Report

SANAA- An official report expected an increase in production of the agricultural sector up to YR 456 billion in 2006 compared to about YR 404 billion in 2005. The report, was published by Al-Thwara Daily, said that the sector would realize a growth at average of 4.6% that would keep contributions of the sector in Domestic Grass Product (DGP) at  14.4%.

The report, issued by Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, pointed out to possibilities of the benefits of the sector from the modern technologies   in improving agriculture through exporting good seeds. The report also indicated to importance of improving infrastructure, particularly in roads and electricity.

The agricultural sector is playing a key role in fulfilling food security and growing the economy as well as creating jobs, the report said.  That the usage of modern means of irrigation would help to reduce the impacts from water shortage, that Yemen has been suffering. According to statistics, Yemen is one of the world countries that have limited agricultural resources as the agricultural land in Yemen is not more than 1.5 million hectare at  2.5% of total lands of the country.

In 2005, the volume of the agricultural production was approximately three million tons. The third five-year development plan targets increase of the production at 4.6% to realize a real food security depended on local agricultural production. The plan aims at reducing the poverty rate in rural areas and protecting natural environment.
