Environmental problems are various and are accentuated by economic growth, population increase, urbanization, etc. Sustainable development requires a balance between achieving economic development and the conservation of natural resources and protection of the environment. The government of Yemen is working to include environmental protection policies and programs, and the maintenance of natural resources, in development plans, as well as in sectoral policies and strategies.
The Poverty Reduction strategy report explicitly adopted a set of environmental objectives and policies, and the prudent management of natural resources. This was reflected in measures to be undertaken by the relevant sectors.
The results of the strategy in 2003 and 2004 added impetus to link poverty and the environment, and to reinforce the integration for these two areas in national and sectoral policies and plans. In addition, the strategy enhanced the ability of governmental agencies and NGOs to move towards sustainable use of the environment and natural resources.
The strategy also provided quality information and data that were used in the Poverty Monitoring System, which will be standardized and made available to all governmental and non-governmental parties .
