Yemeni Press Syndicate announced that July 26 will be the date for the convening of the Fourth General Conference of the general assembly of the Syndicate where 1262 journalist will elect members of the board and the head of the syndicate.
The previous conference of the press syndicate was held on February 21 of 2004, and 689 journalists attended, electing twelve members of the Council Press Syndicate.
Sa’eed Thabet, vice-deputy of the Syndicate said that the council has already begun discussing the reports submitted to the Fourth Conference, namely, the Report Amendment to the Constitution of the Syndicate, the report of freedoms, the report of the Syndicate Secretariat and the financial report, in addition to the theme of job descriptions for journalists in official institutions.
“The Board adopted at its meeting on Tuesday the date of fourth conference, where it is obliged to determine the date according to the internal rules of the syndicate,” Thabet said.
Thabet also pointed out that all issues relating to the conference depend on funding. “The syndicate has begun in communion with the cabinet to extract the necessary funding for the conference,” he added.
He admitted to the existence of shortcomings in the provision of services for members of the Syndicate. Thabet justified, saying, “That happened when the syndicate entered in the vortex of defending freedoms and stand against violations against affiliates, especially after the third conference.”
“The syndicate board put three priorities within its work that is the freedoms, construction works and services,” he stated. “It was able to drop the press draft law which does not meet the minimum rights of journalists. We were suffering from a deficiency in institutional building, but we were able to buy a special syndicate building in Sana’a and got ownership contract of a branch in Aden.”
Thabet hoped that winners in the forthcoming elections to continue the march of the syndicate in different services, whether social or health, calling on journalists to strengthen the role of their syndicate and make it heading of the coming phase.
Marwan Damaj, secretary-general of the syndicate said that 1690 members will attend the Fourth Conference of the syndicate, and 1262 of them will be eligible to vote in upcoming elections, while the 428 associate members are not eligible to vote.
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate Council includes 12 members currently who are Sa’eed Thabet, Marwan Damaj, Hafez al-Buqari, Yasin al-Masoudi, Hamdi al-Buqari, Zekra Abbas, Ali al-Jaradi, Rajeh al-Jaboubi, Sami Ghalib, Abdullah al-Sa’fani, Jamal Fadel, and Watheq al-Shathele.
The Yemeni Press Syndicate has seen resignations from membership of the Council, such as the former head of the Syndicate, Mahbob Ali. Nasr Taha Mustafa was elected instead him in July 12, 2006.
