GPC won governors' elections in seventeen governorates, independent candidates in three, one governorate postponed

Sixteen candidates of the GPC ruling party won the seats of the mayor of the capital and governors from 21 seats across Yemen in the first governors' elections in Yemen held today Saturday May 17.

The rest seats were won by independent candidates that competed their rivals of the GPC candidates in Marib, Al-Beidha, al-Jawf and Rayma while elections were suspended in al-Dhalea governorate for incomplete quorum of voters as a result of the opposition parties boycott of the elections.

Mp Abdulrahman al-Akwa'a won the post of the mayor of the capital Sana'a unanimously gaining 284 votes out of 285.

The independent candidates winner in al-Jawf when Ahmad Abdan got 78 votes while his competitor the candidates of the ruling party the current governor of al-Jawf Fadhl al-Qawsi who lost the elections by one vote gaining only 77.

Also in al-Baeidha the independent candidate Mohammed al-Amiri won 195 votes against his competitor the candidate of the GPC Naser al-Sowadi who gained only 185 votes after a second round of elections.

In Marib the independent candidate Naji al-Zaidi won the elections against his rival the candidate of the GPC and member of the GPC's higher general committee Hussein Hazeb. Al-Zaidi got 141 votes out of 226 despite that the GPC members of  local councils in Marib are 149.

In Rayma  governorate the candidate  of the GPC al-Khadhami could snatch the post from the independent candidate Ahmad al-Thubaibi in the second round of elections.

In Amran governorate Sheikh Kahlan Abu Shwareb  was unanimously elected by the representatives of the GPC and the representatives of the JMP opposition parties that are boycotting the elections. However Abu Shawareb could won 401 votes out of the total votes of 403. Among those voted for Abu Shawareb 129 members of Islah party one member of the Socialist party and the rest were members of the GPC or independents.

In the rest of governorates, candidates of the GPC ruling party won the elections as Hamoud al-Sowfi  in Taiz governorate, Ahmad al-Hajri  in Ibb, Adnan al-Jafri in Aden, Mohsen al-Naqib in Lahj, Ahmad al-Maysari in Abyan, Ali al-Ahmadi in Shabwa, Ali Khawdam in al-Mahra, Salim al-Khanbashi in Hadramout, Ahmad al-Jabali in Hodeidah, Nu'aman Doueid in Sana'a, Farid Mujawar in Haja, Ahmad Ali Muhsin in Mahweet, Hasan Mana'a in Sa'ada, and Yahya al-Amri in Dhamar.

The elections official results have not been announced yet as the high committee of the elections announced that it won't release the official results until receiving and deciding in any challenges that might be presented. No challenges have been reported presented to the committee yet.
