A ceremony was held last Wednesday in Sana’a to congratulate Yemeni universities' graduates for the year 2007-2008, during which President Saleh hailed the educational development in Yemen and called for a reform of the educational curriculum in schools and universities, to entrench patriotism and loyalty to the country.

The graduation ceremony was held on the occasion of Science Day, July 30, and it celebrated the achievements of 28,400 male and female graduates of 8 public universities.

President Saleh honored 411 distinguished graduates coming from different colleges, granting them laptops and giving them recognition certificates. In addition to this, he instructed the Ministry of Civil Service to provide them with state jobs in the year 2008.

Saleh said that 46 years ago there was not even a single university in Yemen and that only few people used to have opportunities to access high school education, whereas now there are eight public universities and 28 thousand male and female students graduated from these universities in the 2007-2008 academic year. He added that most ministers and high ranking officials in the 70s were holders of high school certificates and now more than 240 thousands university graduates have graduated from the eight Yemeni public universities.

President Saleh explained that five new universities are to be established soon and he stressed that the state allocates YR 272 billion for education annually.

In his speech, the President of the country also sized the opportunity to address some of the most important problems that currently faces the country and he called the remnants of rebels in Sa'adah to commit to the ceasefire, surrender their weapons and come back to their homes safely like any other citizens. Saleh also referred to the movement in the south and called it a nonsense being launched by some mercenaries, remnants of the colony, who had claimed that they were revolutionaries of September and October’s revolutions. "Where are they now? They are in London, having their residence or citizenship. Are these people the ones who struggled against the colony and who fought for the revolution?" wondered President Saleh.
