President Ali Abdullah Saleh ordered the government to improve the living standards for journalists and media personnel.
He directed the government to achieve a solution for the media cadre as soon as possible. He affirmed the importance of the mass media as well as the Ministries of Education and Endowment.
He urged partisan mass media to be accurate and precise in dealing with information and not to negatively contribute to the national union, noting that all Yemenis’ should work in one direction for the sake of progress. Saleh was talking in the expanded media meeting that was organized by General Public Congress’s Culture and Information Sector last Tuesday.
“It is good to listen to your concerns and you listen to what we have to say as press and media play an important role in the national, Arab and international arena and it is so nice that these information sources be concerned on getting the right information and be creative,” Saleh said.
He added that, “Political deals and blackmail are rejected and not acceptable, and everybody should commit to the constitution and law.”
The President highly values the role of the youth in the community. They represent the whole country and he calls on them not to be slaves for any party.
“What happened in Saada indicates that there is still ignorance and backwardness and it is a wicked backward act,” Saleh said, noting the desperate attempts to drag the country back. He called the media to spread awareness and enlighten the people.
Head of the Yemeni Journalist Syndicate, Nasr Taha Mustapha, has appreciated the President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s directives to improve the conditions of media workers, saying the move will help them achieve their duties perfectly. Mustapha hopes the government will also approve the project of clarifying the job description of media workers, which was put forward by the syndicate. He hopes the project will be submitted in the upcoming yearly budget. He said the syndicate gives priority to develop media work through preparing the Journalist Honor Charter and amending the journalism law.
Sami Ghaleb said that the Yemeni journalists hope to apply the president’s thoughts in reality. “What we hope is to find effects for these inspections in reality, “he said.
“Since 1991 all the media workers have demanded the government to improve their condition of life but we have nothing until now,” he added.
Ghaleb express his optimism to achieve the media cadre law according to the President’s orders. “The cadre law consists of journalists who work in the official media and we plan to have parliament elections in 2009. Because of this, I think the media cadre will see the life,” Ghaleb said.
Many of journalists in the independent parties and private sectors demand to consistently sustain and express their opinion on the media cadre law.
