Suicide bomber Abdurrahman Mahdi Ali al-Ojiri

Yemen’s security authorities have revealed the identity of the suicide bomber responsible for killing four South Korean tourists and their Yemeni guide last Sunday in Shibam. Security authorities have identified him as 18-year old Abdurrahman Mahdi Ali Qasem al-Ojiri, from Taiz province.

Abdurrahman used to live in the al-Jamhoori Hospital area of Taiz, and he traveled to the United States with his mother in 1995 for a year. Upon his return to Yemen he was recruited by Omer Hassan al-Mahfali al-Raimi, who brought him to the Islamic Institute Center.

Al-Ojiri remained in hiding until he return to his family five days before the Adhha Ied, an Islamic celebration.   Al-Ojiri’s name and picture appeared on the list of the 161 most wanted people in the country that was released by the Ministry of Interior two weeks ago. 

Two months before his death, he sent a letter to his mother containing his will. The letter read as follows, “Dear mother, I write to you with my eyes full of tears, but I believe this is the right pathway through which we can do well for ourselves. Dear mother, I am sad to part from you, but you should know that God’s religion is not in need of us, but we are weak and we need God’s help. Our wealth and estate will be of no use to us. The only thing which is beneficial to us is jihad, holy fighting.  It is the only way for our salvation from excruciation. Please mother, do not be angry with me and pray for God to grant me success, to be fearless and to be a martyr. Please mother, don’t listen to the liars who allege that this is a wrong way, and I am sure that God will show you that it is the right path. I would like to tell you that I thank God for feeling quite at ease. Please pray for me that I should not be arrested or imprisoned, and send my greetings to dad, and the other members of the family.”
 
Security sources have said that searching the bomber’s home has revealed telephone numbers and important documents containing information about the parties that planned the attack. The source said that police have arrested a number of suspects, and have started interrogating them. The source explained that security forces will pursue the perpetrators of this heinous attack, saying they will not get away with their crime.

An informed source at the Ministry of the Interior announced that their investigations have disclosed that the terrorist attack against the South Korean tourists at Shibam took place while they were on Mount Khaba overlooking the city. The terrorist attack by a mislead youth against the Korean tourists in Shibam Hadramout was met with wide condemnation by all sectors of the Yemeni community, who regarded it as an anti-religious act.
