The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research closed four medical colleges at three private universities. This order came as a response to several legal violations at the medical colleges, specifically the teaching of medical courses without a permit from the ministry.
The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Salih Ali Basurrah, said that the ministry has closed the Faculties of Dentistry at the University of Queen Arwa and Yemen University, and the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Dar al-Salam. “The ministry closed these faculties in order to address the situation for the students and take the necessary legal consequences of the offense.

The ministry gave them two weeks to rectify these issues, or face the threat of closure due to the violations,” the minister said.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research had given private universities limited time, roughly two weeks starting from the 27th of December, to close their undergraduate programs in Medicine and Dentistry, because they did not have the proper licenses.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Salih Basurrah, stated that Queen Arwa University, Yemen University and Dar al-Salam University violated the laws governing universities, institutes, and private colleges.

The law in question, No. 13, states that all institutions issuing degrees in the medical fields must have the proper licensing from the ministry.

The schools are accused of ignoring No. 13 since 2005, and of ignoring implemented regulation issued by presidential decree No. 140 for the year 2007, by opening the doors of acceptance and teaching medical practices in undergraduate program. Moreover, this is also considered to be a violation of Prime Minister’s decree No. 13 for the year 2005 and Prime Minister’s decree No. 159 for the year 2005.

“In the event that any of the mentioned universities do not abide by the decision within the time specified, the Ministry will revoke the licenses granted unto those universities, close them, and will not recognize certificates issued by them. The ministry would then pursue all the legal action resulting from this violation,” stated Dr. Salih Basurrah.

He additionally warned all the students and their parents from being misled by false advertising encouraging them to join the faculties of natural sciences, which are not recognized by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

“The decision, made by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, is final. It was a correct action and we are extremely happy with it,” declared, Dr. Yahya al-Hadi, Professor of Facial and Oral Surgeon in Arwa Queen University. “The declaration is working to equalize the market. We encourage the media to come and take photos to ensure the validity of our claims, as people should know about this situation as a matter of transparency. There will be a technical committee coming within the next week for a technical and qualitative examination, and we are almost ready with the appropriate equipment and qualified staff,” he added.

Yemen Observer contacted Yemen University for their comment. A representative from the University announced that the University would respond on Monday, once their own evaluation and statement are prepared, in order to provide concise details and facts.
