Security forces from the Counter-terrorism Department captured a man in Sana’a on February 6th, who threatened to bomb foreign embassies and assassinate leading Yemeni figures, said the Ministry of Interior.

The suspect, al-Najar, 42, was in possession of a stolen car when captured and is said to have used a Saudi citizen’s mobile card he obtain from Hajah governorate when he posed his threats.

“The suspect made several calls to embassies, especially the Egyptian embassy, threatening to bomb, and he dialed “199,” saying that he would assassinate important Yemeni leaders,” the Yemeni Information Center (YIC) reported.

The initial investigation revealed that a woman was involved, too. The two suspects are being interrogated now and will be referred to the specialized court later, YIC added.

Foreign embassies in Yemen have been a target for al-Qaeda during the past couple of years. An al-Qaeda suicide bomber targeted the US embassy in Sana’a in March 2008 where two people were killed and dozens were injured.

Recently, the UK and US closed up their embassies in Sana’a in January 2010 amid expected attacks by al-Qaeda.
