Over 25 women are to be appointed as deputy ministers and general directors in different ministries and governmental institutions, said Vice President Abdu Rabo Mansour Hadi at the opening of the third conference of the Yemen Women’s Union (YWU) held last Wednesday at the police academy hall in Sana’a. “The decrees will be issued appointing 11 female deputy ministers and 12 female general directors,” said the Vice President. Hadi announced the approval of 120 job posts in next year’s budget for women working at the YWU in the different provinces of the country.
Women leaders, academics, intellectuals and researchers gathered last Wednesday at the Police College’s Club to celebrate the International Women’s Day amidst continuous but slow progress of women’s empowerment in Yemen. Unanimously, the gathering agreed on the fact that women’s advancement still requires more time and effort from joint parties to implement improvements for women all over Yemen.
Putting women’s issues in the spot light can only occur when intellectual and thoughtful women work beside men. However, women must first eliminate any tensions between them and make a collective effort towards their own empowerment.
Women in Yemen don’t call for equality with men; they call for equal chances in all fields. They simply ask for fairness in opportunity and the realization of their rights as would any other human being.
Hadi affirmed the political leadership’s keenness to promote the role of women in society and to expand their representation in the various elected bodies therefore strengthening their position in the decision making process. In his speech, Hadi reviewed the effective participation of women in the national renaissance in all political, economic, developmental and social fields as well as their honorable struggle in defense of the 26th of September and 14th of October revolutions. “The woman today is a minister, a parliamentarian, an ambassador, a physician, an engineer, a university professor, and a party leader and in the Police College and the Higher Judicial Institute. There is no difference between them and the men in light of the laws and the constitution only in the efficiency and capacity”, Hadi said.
He added that the state is always seeking to empower women in all leadership positions and legislative institutions and to provide them with better conditions by creating a legal and legislative environment that ensures their rights as these rights are a fundamental pillar of society.
Hadi confirmed that the country needs all its citizens whether men or women to work together to build Yemen.
