Children’s Parliament prepares for elections

More than 40,000 Yemeni children from varied governorates of the Republic will compete for 50 seats in the Children’s Parliament for the fifth time.

The Chairman of the Democracy School Jamal al-Shami said that the school is currently conducting preparations to carry out the fifth election of Children’s Parliament in the middle of next April.

“Important arrangements are being made in order to implement the elections including organizing the elections’ schedule, preparing the prints and determining the participating schools – around 50 - which are chosen by the Ministry of Education. In addition to the poorest as Center for Restoration and Rehabilitation of Child Workers, Center of Blind, Shoob School for Deaf and Dumb, Foundation of Mercy of the Orphans, the physically disabled and a number of displaced children.”

Al-Shami also pointed out that the door is now open for children who wish to nominate themselves for election to the Children’s Parliament.  This will continue until the 20th of this month.

“The period of electoral appeal of the candidates will begin during the period from 1 to 5 of next April,” said al-Shami.

Moreover, al-Shami said that the Children’s Parliament election is considered to be a unique Arab model in the practice of democracy and that it contributes to the creation of awareness of the children’s electoral competition.

The Chairman of the Democracy School confirmed that the General Secretariat of the Children’s Parliament is keen to develop the experience of Children’s Parliament and make the members of the Parliament meet the required skills to carry out their activities in advocating children’s issues and supporting legislation for children and monitor their implementation in the reality.
