The Yemeni air force launched an air raid against a “terrorist cell” in Modiah of Abyan province southeast of the country has killed two senior al-Qaeda members late Sunday, the defense ministry said on Monday. The members were identified as Gameel al-Anbari, the commander of al-Qaeda in Abyan, and al-Zargah.

According to the defense ministry, the air force carried out a raid on terrorist elements who were planning attacks on vital installations (and) two al-Qaeda leaders were killed.

The head of the local council in Modiah said that the air raid targeted two members of al-Qaeda riding a motorcycle near Gizat al-Genan village in Modiah district. He affirmed that the two al-Qaeda suspects were killed and there were no casualities among civilians.

Local sources affirmed more air raids took place later Monday in al-Maliha, Jawar and al-Hamra areas of Modiah district. The Director of Modiah, Mohammed al-Nakhai, denied that there were no raids on Monday. The sources said that two more air raids were launched Monday morning resulting in several casualties. According to these local sources the security forces have surrounded the stroked areas and that they have found some corpses believed to be to al-Qaeda militants.  Earlier this month, a security official said 11 men were arrested in the capital Sana’a on suspicion of plotting attacks for Al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda militants have previously targeted Western embassies in the city.

Security forces arrested three suspected members of al-Qaeda on February 17 in Marib province, east of the capital and on January 16 the authorities announced the arrest of three other suspected al-Qaeda militants. The United States has reportedly supplied Yemen with intelligence and other support in its operations against al-Qaeda.
