The United Nation Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance announced on Thursday May 27th that many humanitarian projects in Yemen are being threatened of closing at the end of June, due to lack of funding.

Donations provided to the UN office do not equal the financial human challenges in Yemen, explained the spokeswoman of the office said in a press conference.

The spokeswoman, Elizabeth Pierce, spoke on behalf of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance and said that about thirty percent of children and pregnant women who suffer from “acute malnutrition” in Yemen no longer receive food aid.

Pierce reported that support provided will be maintained to feed 50,000 children of displaced people under the age of five year until the end of August. She said that about 50,000 displaced children and refugees are vulnerable to the lack of access to food aid this summer unless they raise the money for it.

She, moreover, clarified that the plan of the humanitarian program to Yemen requires $177 million for the year 2010; the office received only $49 million, despite the growing needs and the increase of number of beneficiaries.

“The lack of funding urges humanitarian agencies working in Yemen to reduce their activities significantly in all sectors and limit food rations by fifty percent starting this month,” said a release issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance.
