Mayor of the Capital promoted reproductive health programs for combating population

Secretariat of the capital is witnessing a mass migration of students from nearby villages and other cities. Schools in the capital are receiving between 50 to 60 thousand new students every year coming from outside the capital while receiving between 10-12 thousand students of the capital, said Minister of State, Mayor of the capital Sana’a, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed al-Akwa’a.
He, furthermore, added that these figures reflect the fact of the massive exodus to the capital each year, describing the increase in population as a great risk.
“Population explosion is the most important challenge facing the government in the present and future, and there will be no development or any improvement with economic and social development in the country under the spectacular increase in population in Yemen,” al-Akwa’a added.
Al-Akwa’a called during a ceremony honoring the intellectuals gathered to raise awareness in the capital on Monday to establish a higher coordinating board led by deputy president or prime minister includes the relevant ministries to work population, health, civil society organizations and donors in order to unify the message of population and health.
He, moreover, affirmed on the importance of the role played by intellectuals in raising awareness and health promotion in society and limit the spread of many diseases and the critical role played by media in the same direction announcing the intention of the Secretariat of the capital to establish a local radio station that will give focus to issues of population and health.
Al-Akwa’a called to issue a legislation criminalizing childhood neglect in order to protect children from neglect or ill-treatment which they get from their families that deprive them of education, health and basic rights.
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Population , Jameela al-Ra’abi, reviewed the stages process of community education in Yemen, pointing out that more than 619,968 people have benefited from this educational program in all provinces of the Republic through 38,000 educational sessions.
Al-Ra’abi highly praised the significant role of the basic health services project of the Development Fund of America in support of many societal issues in Yemen.
“Celebration of gathered intellectuals was the result of continued hard work and exerted effort for two years during which about a million dollars were spent as training in the capital and five other provinces,” said Hamouda Hanafi, Director of basic health services project.
He pointed out to media their role in the project, stressing that there are 14 local radios operating daily to deliver these messages to people.
It is worth mentioning that basic health messages guide includes about 40 basic health suggestion on the health of the mother, child and family planning.
