An al-Qaeda leader in Yemen has been arrested by security in the northern town of Arhab on Thursday, the Defense Ministry reported.
Security said the arrest of Hezam Mujali came after intensive pursuits and was also a result of the interrogation of al-Qaeda militants.
“He surrendered after a successful raid by the anti-terrorism forces on a house he was hiding in,” an official told AFP.
Information obtained from “recently arrested elements and leaders of Al-Qaeda have helped in arresting new militants and foiling terrorist attacks on vital security and economic installations,” the official added. Mujali was sentenced in August 2004 for his involvement in the deadly attack on the French tanker, the Limburg, in October 2002, off Yemen’s southeastern coast.
The attack killed one Bulgarian crew member and wounded 12 others.
Mujali is one of the escapees from Yemen’s political security in February 2006.
The remote region in Arhab District called Hezam, about 40 km north of the capital, is considered a stronghold of al-Qaeda militants.
In a related issue, gunmen believed to be al-Qaeda affiliates launched an offensive attack on security in Loeder district of Abyan province late Thursday afternoon, leaving two security personal dead and another injured, almotamar.net reported.
Security sources said al-Qaeda militants attacked a number of security personnel in a public market with machine guns. The attack left one al-Qaeda member injured.
According to almotamar, the security crackdown following the attack resulted in the arrest of a key leader of al-Qaeda in Abyan called Anis al-Awli.
Abyan province, a stronghold of al-Qaeda, has witnessed growing activity from al-Qaeda who has made several attacks against intelligence and security headquarters, killing dozens of military and security personnel.
