A government report exposed that there are approximately 1,394,000 children in Yemen who are still outside the scope of education and are not able to enroll in school, threating the generation with illiteracy and allowing the number of illiterate in the country to become the majority.
Despite the attention paid by the Yemeni government to basic education in the country and despite the achievements of public education sector in Yemen there are still many obstacle to overcome in education.
The report, furthermore, said that the Supreme Council for Education Planning, the highest regulatory body for education in Yemen, attributed the reasons for children being outside the scope of illiteracy to the weakness of educational services in some remote areas and urban areas that are located on the outskirts of the country noting that the spread of poverty makes it inevitable for households to withdraw their children from primary school and include them to the labor market to help them to support the family.
Supreme Council for Education Planning said in one of its latest reports that the average rate of children, aged between 6-14, who are dropping out of primary school has reached 8.11%.
The government report stressed strengthening primary education which represents the foundation of later education as well implementing measures to prevent children from becoming illiterate.
