A total of 14 al-Qaeda suspects were arrested in the city of Lawdar, Abyan where Yemeni forces having been combing al-Qaeda hideouts for more than two weeks now, official sources said Sunday

“The security forces are hunting for the remaining terrorists around the clock, and those trying  to escape will be arrested at the security check points which surround  Lawdar,” said a statement by the ministry of interior.

A total of 4 out of the 14 militants, including the leading al-Qaeda operative Salah Al Dabani, were arrested at check points,  said the statement.

The statement expected that some of al-Qaeda militants will surrender themselves to the security authorities after local tribal leaders relinquish support and aid to them.

Search operations by Yemeni security forces have started in the town of  Lawdar and the areas around it  since the middle of last month when fierce confrontations killed more than 30 people including 19 al-Qaeda militants and 11 soldiers.

In a related news, gunmen in Mudyah district, Abyan province, ambushed a tribal Sheikh from Abyan, killing him and two of his personal bodyguards late Saturday evening.

Local sources told Lahj news that Sheikh Hussein Majdal was coming back from an evening party at the governor’s house when gunmen believed to be al-Qaeda militants, attacked the sheikh’s car.

In a relevant matter, confrontations between al-Qaeda militants and government troops erupted once again in Lawdar district but there are no causalities reported yet.
