Five al-Qaeda insurgents were reported killed by a US drone in southern Yemen, said security source on Wednesday.
The source said the strike targeted hideouts of al-Qaeda insurgents in t al-Arqoub area east of Zinjubar, of Abyan province.
The source said that drone strike in Abyan killed 5 and injured seven.
American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was killed by a drone on Sept. 30 in al-Jawf province in the north of Yemen.
Yemeni officials also reported that clashes in Abyan province in the past two days killed nine insurgents including two Pakistanis and a Chechen.
Military officials said two Yemeni soldiers were killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb and two others in fighting with al-Qaida militants, also east of Zinjibar.
A second roadside bomb detonated by remote control killed two civilian anti-al-Qaeda activists Wednesday near a checkpoint in the town of Lawdar northeast of Zinjubar.
