The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Following the nightmare that was 2011, Faris Sanabani the President and Patron of Yemen Special Olympics promised that 2012 will bring new hope and most importantly a breath of fresh air to the impoverished nation. “After a year of darkness Yemen needs to focus on its future.”
The team that trained for 3 months in Aden is said to be ready to take on the challenge and represent Yemen at the Special Olympics. Prior to its departure for Algeria, the Yemen Special Olympics team of volunteers decided to reward its team members with 3 days of sheer fun and games in the capital, Sana’a.
Team members were celebrated at an event attended by Yemeni sports celebrities and state officials. For the 1st time the team will travel with an assigned care taker who will ensure that all team members are properly cared for and confortable. All members said they were excited and proud to be representing their country, promising to excel.
