Jamal Benomar was appointed as Special Adviser on Yemen for the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Benomar will be charged with “leading strengthened “good offices’ in for Yemen during the country’s transition, stated a UN press statement on July 1.
Benomar has served as the UN Special envoy on Yemen from April 2011. In the same context, Benomar said there is an agreement in the UN Security Council on the necessity of making the political settlement in Yemen a success.
He added in an interview on TV with Alarbia that all those who are trying or causing any chaos in Yemen who he described as impeders of the GCC will be receive sanctions.
He said that the war with al-Qaeda will not succeed until the political settlement is achieved, calling, at the same time on al-Houthis to resort to a political party.
These points and statements of Benomar came one day after the attack against the Ministry of Interior Ministry where several Yemeni soldiers were killed and wounded. the attack on the interior ministry in considering as blcking the transition process.
inIn an interview with al-Arabyia TV channel on July 1, Benomar, Benomar said that Confronting al-Qaeda cannot be acheived soley via military action, wich will need advancing of the political process as well as a comperhensive economic plan.
Benomar has engeneered the mechanism of the GCC deal which aimed to put and end to the political deadlock caused by the anti-government protest that broke out in early 2011. sinceSince then he has sporadically visited Yemen as political tensions would intensify among factions.
Regarding the National Dialogue, the second part of the GCC deald that would address grivencesgrievances of other factions not included in the first phase, He said that he had maintained consistent communication with with al-Houthi group, the Shitte rebels that controls large swathes in the north region of Sada’aSa’adah. “
I had asked them to be engaged in the political process and they accepted the idea. nowNow the Houthis are now represented in the preliminary committee for the national dialogue. So, we we hope that all political groups are to take part in the political actions and to renounce violence as a means to achieve political goals,” Benomar said. Southern Movement Ffor the Southern Movement, under which lies several southern groups airing greivences, Benomar said that he met all pliticalpolitical parties in the south which he described as “not homogenuos”.
“There are those with the seperationseparation and others with federations and also decenterilaztion... There are a concensus by all to address the southern issue.
There is a historic opprtunityopportunity in the National Dialogue which will adress the southern, Sa’ada, political system, and the state retructrerestructure issues,” said Benomar Benomar said that Irannthat Iran has so far done nothing positive in resolving the Yemeni crisis.
“We witnessed a positive role from the Yemeni’s friend states in the region and we hope that Iran will do so,... nothing [positive from Iran] has been doen so far.”
