Five Yemeni police were seriously injured when armed tribes attacked them in north Yemen on late Saturday afternoon, deepening an increasingly lawless region in a heavily armed tribal society, police said.

The police were en route to arrest a wanted man from Amran province, 50kms to North of Sana’a, when a tribe man threw a grenade at the police, said a police officer in Sana’a.

The officer, who spoke on anonymity condition, said that three of the five police just arrived Sana’a for treatment from serious injury. “Their medical conditions are unstable,” the officer said. The other two police were taken to a local hospital as they sustain minor injuries.

A colonel in Amran’s General Security said reinforcements were sent to arrest the attackers the officer said are now being backed by gunmen. “So far,” the colonel said, “they refused to turn themselves in. Police are now besieging the place [in which the armed tribes are]. It will be a mess if they are not apprehended.”
