A Yemeni military commander has survived an assassination attempt when a gunman attacked his convoy in the province of Lahj, south of Yemen on Saturday.
A military source said a lone gunman in a car attacked the convoy of Chief Major General Mahmoud al-Sobaihi, Commander of al-Anad military base and the 201st Brigade.
The attack happened in the region of Bani Ayyad, bordering Lahj province, according to al-Masdaronline website.
An exchange of gunfire took place between the commander’s bodyguards and the armed assassin, leading to the injury of the assailant who was later arrested, an innocent bystander was also wounded.
The source speculated that the gunman may be a member of al-Qaeda and that he may have failed to blow up the car in the convoy.
The 201st Brigade was involved in the army’s campaign to expel al-Qaeda militants from towns in Abyan province, taking advantage of the political and military turmoil at that time.
