A total of 197 accidents took place during the period of December 15 – 22, which took lives of 74 people of whom were 50 males, 18 females and 6 children. These accidents also left more than 365 injured. Most of the accidents were caused by not abiding the laws of traffic, and reckless driving.
Some of the worst accidents happened just two days before the Eid holidays in the Mountain of Somarah en route to Ibb which resulted in the death of 16 people.
Statistics have shown that there has been an increase in the number of accidents compared to last year’s Eid Al-Adha. The accidents reported in 2006 were 171 which resulted in the death of 46 people and left 167 injured. With the number of accidents rising at an alarming rate, the interior ministry took a positive measure by distributing many leaflets to drivers with instructions on how to take good care of their vehicles before traveling.
But despite these attempts by the Ministry of Interior to compel drivers to abide by traffic laws, statistics have shown that there has been no major improvement in the number of deaths and injuries resulting from accidents.
In Ibb15 people were killed and an eight-year old girl injured in a car accident that took place in Sumara last Sunday, 16th December. The accident took place when the driver lost control of his vehicle while speeding. The car drove off the road and rolled down several times until it got to the bottom of Sumara. The car was overloaded with 16 people belonging to the same family, eight male and eight females including the surviving girl. Said Abdul-Wahab Al-Johaifi, the head of accidecxnts section in the General Traffic Administration in Ibb, stated that the bodies were scattered on the uplands. Two bodies were found decapitated. The family was riding in their own car, coming from Sana’a to Ibb. The surviving girl is still in intensive care at Al-Thowra hospital.
According to the same source, 3 other people were also killed in separate accidents. Two women and 26 others were injured in ten other traffic accidents in Yarim, Al-Qa’eda, Ba’dan, Maitam and Al-Odain during the Eid holiday, 17-25 of December.
