Yemeni student disappears in Egypt

Ayman Numan, a fifth year student studying in the College of Dentistry at 6th of October University in Egypt, disappeared in Cairo. He has been missing since December 15th, 2006.

Numan’s father, a resident of Saudi Arabia, said that his son disappeared after he was arrested and investigated by an Egyptian police center in Cairo that same day.

His son was driving his car following Friday prayers on December 15th when he became involved in a car accident. The two drivers were detained and transferred to al-Ajoza police center. The prosecutor at al-Ajoza referred Ayman to the doctor because he was confused and in a bad psychological state. However, he was never shown to a doctor and on the next day the prosecutor fined Ayman 200 Egyptian pounds for driving a car without a driver’s or car license. 

According to his father, the al-Ajoza police center transferred Ayman to the al-Dugy police center which investigated whether he had a case that threatened state security. He claimed the police tortured and mistreated his son before he disappeared.

Ayman’s car was found outside of the al-Dugi police center along with his wallet and cell phone.

His father considers this as evidence that his son disappeared in the police station and not the result of petty crime.  His father said that his son’s cell phone continued working for 12 days after his disappearance.  

The Yemeni Embassy in Cairo sent a letter on February 28, 2007 to the Egyptian general prosecutor, Abdul Majeed Mahmood, to which was attached the complaint from Ayman’s father about his son’s disappearance from al-Dugi police center. 

The Yemeni ambassador also contacted the Egyptian Minister of the Interior and the General Director of al-Jiza police instructing the security authorities to search for Ayman. However, Ayman’s father questions why they have been searching for his son in the streets and residences when he disappeared from the police center where his car, wallet and cell phone were found.
