Parliament grants political parties grace period to decide on election commission

A meeting held on Saturday evening by the Parliamentary Committee for Studying Amendments to the Elections Law resulted in a request for delegates of the different political groups to inform their parties that the committee will take procedures under authorization of the constitution and the law concerning the formation of the supreme commission for elections from judges. 

The Committee is composed of the Rights and Freedoms Committee, a chairman, and reporter of constitutional affairs and is expected to produce a report soon. Chairman of the committee, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Naji al-Shaef, said that the committee tried to consider the political character of the amendments over the past three months and later gave a chance for accord among the parties. The Committee’s meeting comes at a crucial time, as they must prepare for the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 2009.

Al-Shaef affirmed that the committee is concerned basically about carrying out its tasks according to the parliament rules of procedure and the assignment approved late last year. However, in the meantime, he called on the political parties to decide on the subject represented by the agreement of principles signed between the General People’s Congress and the Joint Meeting Parties before the presidential and local elections that were held in September 2006.
