The President of the Republic and President of the General People Congress Party (GPC), Ali Abdullah Saleh, assigned Abdulrahman al-Akwa’a as an acting Secretary General of the ruling party GPC on Wednesday April 30, according to almotamar.net, the official website of the GPC.
According to the website, al-Akwa’a, who was the assistant secretary general, was assigned by President Saleh to take the responsibilities of the Secretary General Abdulgadir Ba Jamal until he returns back to homeland. Ba Jamal was reported being hospitalized in Singapore after suffering brain clusters and cardiac problems.
Ba Jamal left Yemen for Singapore two weeks ago to receive his 2008 Champions of the Earth Prize, granted to him by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), along with six other world personalities whom have shown extraordinary leadership on environmental issues. However, following receipt his medal, he was hospitalized in Singapore on April 23, suffering from brain clusters and cardiac attack that caused him to enter a total coma and semi paralysis.
Abdulrahman al-Akwa’a , member of the parliament and Assistant Secretary General of the GPC, was a former Minister of Youth and former Minister of Information. He is one of the most popular politicians of the GPC and key leader of the party, particularly in the capital Sana’a. He won the membership of the parliament representing the constituency number 8 in the capital Sana’a and has served for three successive terms. He is known for being honest and and a reformist and of being the only minister that still drives his own private Toyota Crassida car from 1990 until now, as many minsters opt for newer, more expensive cars.
Some political analysts from the GPC said that appointing al-Akwa’a was a correct decision and came at the right time, particularly in that the party needs a firm secretary general that can lead the party during the elections of the governors to be run on May 17.
