A two day academic and financial workshop organized by the Project for Promoting Higher Education in coordination with the Dutch university ‘Master Haut’ concluded last Thursday 19 June at Ibb University. 53 pedagogues and academics participated in the workshop, coming from six Yemeni universities: Ibb, Taiz, Hodeida, Dhamar, Hadramout and Amran.
Ahmed Mohammed Shogaaddin, rector of Ibb University, headed the final session expressing his thanks to the deans, vice-deans of faculties, and heads of sections for their attendance and contribution, stressing the need to now benefit from the experiences shared and to find common criteria applicable to the country.
Becass Sanial, an international expert, praised the participants for their earnestness and persistence in continuing their work so as to develop the performance of the financial, administrative, and academic sectors of the university and to benefit from the experiments of developed and underdeveloped countries that achieved great scientific success and development in these fields.
The workshop came out with a number of recommendations which called for the completion of charts and rules relevant to finance and administration to obtain development and independence for the university, going beyond the routine of mere budget, establishing decentralized financial units on the level of the faculties, setting up centers for consultations, research, and service in the specializations, creating centers dedicated to computer and internet, languages, translation, civil and electronic engineering, investing in free areas located on main streets by building and leasing, activating animal agricultural production in the Faculty of Agriculture, as well as activating partnerships between the university and commercial and industrial institutions locally, regionally, and internationally for obtaining sufficient financial sources.
The recommendations also discussed the problems of governmental finance and the lack of awareness of the private sector, as well as the importance of research centers and support for the university.
