The Ministry of Culture honors today the security officers responsible for apprehending the smuggling operation of 16 important ancient artifacts that were to be sold outside the country. The officers are to be awarded a bonus and a certificate for their role in protecting the national heritage.

“Honoring the security officers is a way to show appreciation and encouragement to the loyal security men for what they did and for having national approach in protecting our heritage and culture,” said Minister of Culture Mohammed Abu Bakr al-Muflahi.

Al-Mulflahi stated that the honoring is also a motivation and a way to enhance awareness for everybody to hold their responsibilities in protecting our historical treasures. “This fortune must be the responsibility of all because it is considered our civilization and our national inheritance,” he added.

The security officers seized several ancient pieces from two men who were transporting them in a car when the officers checked the vehicle in al-Oroq checkpoints in Marib Street, to Bani Hawat area in the Capital last week.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the security officers found the ancient pieces hidden inside plastic bags concealed by sponges in their car, and refused a bribe offered by the smugglers to set them free; instead they arrested them immediately.  There were 16 stone pieces sculpted with human heads and Musnad carving, in addition to a bronze statue of a woman praying, made of bronze and weighing between 12-15 kilograms.
