If new measures are not taken to solve the twin problems of overpopulation and water source depletion in the Ibb Governorate, catastrophic consequences will take place over the next ten years, Abdussalam al-Faqih, teaching staff member at Ibb University, ominously warned, during a lecture he delivered last Wednesday, to an all-female audience at the university’s Summer Center.
Indicating that the Ibb Governorate is the leading province in women’s fertility averages, exceeding 3.2 percent, he elaborated that such high a birthrate will create a pressing atmosphere, with increasing demands for public services in educational, health, and environmental sectors, among others.
Al-Faqih reviewed the gravity of this situation by elaborating on current deteriorating education and health standards. For example, 44.2 percent of girls do not even receive basic education, and the doctor-patient ratio in the governorate is now a dismal 1:900.
He also revealed declining moral standards in the rise of the number of illegitimate children. He also hinted that Ibb Governorate suffers from the rise in the death rate among mothers and children. Statistics indicate that there are 365 mothers’ deaths and 70 childrens’ for every 100,000 births.
The professor revealed the risks faced by exposed water sources in Ibb Governorate, i.e. depletion, pollution, and water dropping – water exists at deep distances, for example, and the depth that is needed to dig wells currently exceeds 700 meters. Emphasizing the necessity of youths holding up their responsibilities in teaching society and increasing its awareness about these issues, he recommended they utilize their creative skills and undertake projects such as harvesting rain water and reducing the average of water consumed daily.
In a second lecture, Brigadier General Abdullah al-Zarkah, Ibb University Security Manager, stressed the importance of national history awareness with all its various stages in what pertains fixing youths’ awareness as an important preface to popularize society’s awareness to back up national culture resistant all forms of defame, counterfeit and changing facts.
Al-Zarkah indicated during the lecture he delivered last Wednesday in front of male participants at the Summer Center at Ibb University revolutionists epic role who offered their necks as poles for building the new Yemen, viewing examples of suffering that the revolutionists and strugglers had tasted its bitterness during the Revolution and the Republic battlefields defense.
